The Experience 2011 : Special Command Edition

The Experience has come again, This year’s event is going to be aSpecial Command Edition holding on Friday 2^nd of December, 2011 from5pm to 1am. This is very different from the 5 previous editions that was heldat the Tafawa Balewa Square(TBS) . The Experience has been known as the world’slargest gospel music concert and the largest music event in Africa with lastyear’s edition recording over a million people in attendance.

The Experience has featuredartists such as Don Moen, KirkFranklin, Ron Kenoly, Cece Winans, Israel Houghton, Donnie McClurkin, KurtCarr, Bebe Winans, Tye Tribbett, Lionel Petersen, Panan Percy Paul, Papa San,Phil Driscol, Mary Mary, Micah Stampley, Judy Jacobs, Mike Aremu, IsrealHoughton, Sammy Okposo, Fred Hammond, Chevelle Franklyn, Lara George and theChosen Treasure Choir and a lot of indigenous gospel artistes.

This year’s event will be holding at the New Expo Hall of the EkoHotels, Victoria Island Lagos which is limited in space hence the need fortickets for attendance. The tickets were however given out free. This wasachieved by giving codes upon registering on a ticket portal. These codes werelater used to redeem tickets for the event. The codes were limited andtherefore ran out in a short time. Its not easy trying to compress an eventthat has about a million people in attendance into 6000.

Chapter 27:6 Faithful [are] the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy [are] deceitful.

When our friends reprove us or tell us our faults it might be painful and sometimes its like a wound. it is supposed to correct us and move us from our comfort zone. A friend will correct you in love, not with a wrong motive. The enemy will only show an open love and secret hatred.

Chapter 26:4-5 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

To “answer a fool according to his folly” means to descend to his level of reasoning, coarse anger and abuse; in 5 it is to say the right word to him at the right time, to expose his lack of wisdom, not by a telling him what is beyond his comprehension because it will be useless to him. Answer a fool in your own wisdom and not in his foolishness. Don't come down to his level!

Imagine a house without doors and windows, there is free entry and exit, there is no restraint. So is a man without self control, He is without restraint, his desires are not controlled. he is exposed to sin, snare and temptations. A wise man is of good character, He has the rule of his own thoughts, his desires, his inclinations, his resentments, and keeps them all in good order.

Trials and temptations are bound to come. When they come, yielding to them, getting discouraged, growing weak shows how much of strength we have stored up.Our strength is not tried till we are in trouble. Staying courageous even in trying times is a measure of our strength. Understand that we do not have any strength of our own. Without God, we can do nothing, Therefore in time of crisis, holding on to God is the surest source of strength.

This is very important in living our lives. The instructions may come from a higher authority God has placed over us or from parents. It is a disciplined instruction because it might not be convenient but it will make us grow. Tested knowledge is a tested application of wisdom.

There is a reward for persistent and hard-working effort in doing something. This tells us that whatever our hands finds to do, do it with all your heart. The reward is standing before great men, men with great reverence

The excuse of the lazy person is the cold. under the pretense of an unfavourable weather, he stays indoor when others are toiling, plowing and sowing. When the harvest comes, and the weather is warm, he comes out hoping to harvest what he didn't sow. There is a time for everything, a time to sow and a time to reap. The lazy will stay hungry and be in lack and he turns to a beggar.
He did not work when the time was right and the conditions were right even though it was not convenient and comfortable. There is a time for everything....

This is for the unmarried. its a call to note that the choice of a spouse has a lot to do with our life and how we relate with God. People say its one of the greatest decisions that can be made in life. It has a way of affecting so many things in the present and our future. The choice of a spouse will affect your relationship with God, career, finances, health, family, children, etc There is no gambling in this case therefore we need God's help in making the right decisions.

There is no joy and peace remotely comparable to the assurance that we are striving to the very best of our tiny little ability to please God every moment. A commentary put it this way "God can turn a hangman into a friend and a benefactor if his purpose requires it" when his ways and actions are directed to the glory of God.

Here the diligence of the wise is contrasted with the laziness of a fool. There is an uncertainty for the lazy one Everything is too hard, too long or too boring. The indecision, the procrastination is painful, he makes little progress. He has all the reasons in the world for his failures; he changes direction time and again, and usually gives up in dismay. But the [upright] know what they want, how to get it and what they must do next. Their life is not complicated by procrastination. If it needs to be done, they do it -- their way is plain. by the procrastination of the lazy, he lays on himself burdens that do not exist.

Somethings look very good and inviting at first sight but a careful consideration of such reveals much more. 'Things are not what they seem.' A flame seems good to a moth; thin ice, safe to a heedless child; the sparkling water, refreshing to one who knows not that the well from which it is drawn has been poisoned. The bad social custom appears to be innocent to the slave of fashion. Remember that such a way 'seems' right' so there might be no indicators telling us not to take such decisions. From a simple assessment, nothing is really wrong with it. Do not make hasty decisions,look again.

The company we keep has a lot of influence on us, a good company will contribute to your growth and safety.. We are clearly advised to be mindful of the association we have with fools. 'Bad company corrupts good character' . Think about the people around you, how do they influence you? will they help you become who God wants you to be or they are pulling you miles away from it. Setting our priorities in the right order is the key thing. We spend a lot of time, energy and resources on the things we place value on. Money and riches are good but they are temporal and the level of satisfaction it will give is limited when not sought with wisdom. Put wisdom first and it will teach you how to attain all you want. Consider setting a snare for a bird when it is watching, you would expect the bird to stay away from the looming danger of being caught. Foolishly the bird ignores the snare and goes for the bait and it it ensnared.

Its no surprise that people do things that have grave consequences that are well known to them and they still go ahead without any thought of it. They look at the immediate satisfaction of their needs without the end in view.

Welcome to the month of November!
God has been faithful in the last 10 months even when we choose to be unfaithful.
Our unfaithfulness has not made His faithfulness to be without effect.
It has been challenging but God has been my present help even in the time of need.I believe you can also say the same.
Look back at the last 10 months and Thank God for all he has done for you.
You might not be where you want to be but surely you are not where you used to be.
Cast your minds back, count your blessings name them and you will be surprised at what God has done for you .
Remember God is able to do what He said HE will do.

The book of Proverbs provides profound insights, advice and exceptional wisdom on how to live a happy and a peaceful life and honour God. Wisdom is commonly defined as the right application of knowledge. Can we apply what we don't know?

Lost Generation - Poem

I read this poem sometime ago and I thought to share...
This poem has a read-and- reverse style and was written by Jonathan Reed. It is a pessimistic monologue of how this generation looks. When read in the reverse, it paints a brighter future

I'm a part of Lost Generation

and I refuse to believe that

I can change the world

I realize this may be a shock but

"Happiness comes from within"

is a lie, and

"Money will make me happy"

So in thirty years I'll tell my children

They are not the most important thing in my life

My employer will know that

I have my priority straight because

Work

Is more important than

Family

I tell you this

For toolong, Nigeria and Nigerians have been readily associated with the online scams,financial crime and impersonation - termed ‘419’.However, beyond the unfortunate stereotyping, there are several positive characteristicsand cogent intriguing traits of the country, Nigeria and its people, some ofwhich are highlighted below as part of the ‘419 Reasons to Like Nigeria’ campaign which enlisted 100 volunteersand bloggers to share reasons why they like Nigeria. These reasons echo thevoices of Nigerians, with resonating similar themes. The campaign is beingfacilitated in partnership with ‘The 419Positive Project’.

NIGERIA - THE LAND OF POTENTIAL ANDOPPORTUNITY

v I like Nigeria because it is a land of endlessopportunities and possibilities. Nigeria is one country whose true potentials Ibelieve the world is yet to experience. I believe Nigerians are sharp,brilliant and accommodating people. Giving the right enabling environment the worldwill marvel at what Nigeria will become.

v Nigeria is the most populous black nation - and abuying one at that. From a capitalist point of view, this makes for greatinvestment opportunities.

v The fact that Nigeria currently lags behind so much -in infrastructure and developmental terms - hints at the size of the potentialfor innovation and transformation, and at the huge number of vacancies thatexist for 'transformers'. What I think this means is that the world will behearing a lot about Nigeria and high-achieving Nigerians (in the public andprivate sectors) in the near future.

NIGERIA - THE COUNTRY

v The Nigerian Green and White flag is a notablenational symbol. The green color symbolises agriculture, seeing that thecountry is endowed with masses of arable land, while the white colour signifiesunity and peace. Other national symbols include the Nigerian Coat of Arms,which depicts an eagle on a black shield, tri-sected by two wavy silver bands,and supported on either side by two chargers. The national motto underlies thecoat-of -arms: "Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress." Her nationalsymbols convey great meaning to its people.

v The Nigerian accent is currently ranked by CNN GlobalExperiences as the 5th sexiest accent in the world.

v Nigeria is home to Nollywood, one of the world'sbiggest film industries.

NIGERIA - THE CULTURE, THE FOOD, THE WAYOF LIFE

v Something great to like about Nigeria is our culturaldiversity. A strong affinity exists, despite our differences. Learning aboutother ethnic cultures in my country really helped me personally relate to othercultures when abroad.

v I think the food is tastier in Nigeria than that Ihave found in other countries.

v Nigerians live a communal life style. The extendedfamily is part of the immediate family in a Nigerian home.

NIGERIA - THE MUSIC, THE MOVIES, THEDANCE, THE ART

v Nigeria has produced many world class musicians. Anotable mention in this regard is Fela Anikulapo Kuti. A Broadway show titled‘FELA!’ was produced in 2009 depicting the life and times of the Afrobeatmusician.

v Nigeria’s movie industry, Nollywood, is reputedly the3rd largest film industry after Hollywood and Bollywood, and has growngradually into a $250 million industry in more than 10 years.

v Nigerian indigenous musical instruments are unique,soulful and rhythmic. They comprise the popular Talking Drum, producingproverbial and storytelling sounds, the Shaker (shekere), the Udu drum, theLute, the leg and arm Rattle, the Omele, the Ogene (Gong originating in EasternNigeria), the Ekwe drum and the Kakaki (A 4m metal trumpet popular in NorthernNigeria). Many of these instruments have been incorporated in South Americanmusic over the years

NIGERIA - GEOGRAPHY and NATURALRESOURCES

v Nigeria Nigeria is a nation blessed with rich humanand natural resources. As the 8th largest exporter of Oil in the world, withthe 10th largest proven reserves, our blessings cannot be overemphasised. Noearthquakes, no tsunamis, no droughts, an evergreen land. The rest of the worldshould live here.

v The beauty of the Nigerian state cannot but leave onein awe. Blessed with captivating physical features and abundant wild life. Fromthe rolling hills to the vast plains in the North Central Nigeria and theforests in the South, the beautiful scenery of the country is more thanbreathtaking and with the wildlife spread all over the country; Nigeria issurely a beauty to behold and a tourist's delight all year round.

v Nigeria is blessed with tremendous agriculturalresources. Cotton in the North, Cocoa & Oil palm in the south amongst manyothers. The flag is green for a reason

NIGERIA - WEST AFRICA, AFRICA and THEWORLD

v Nigeria has the largest population of any country inAfrica. Approximately 1 out of every 2 West Africans, 1 out of every 4Africans, and 1 out of every 5 persons of African origin is a Nigerian.

v Nigeria is the largest contributor of troops to theECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) and by extension, is the largest force forpeace and stability in West Africa.

v A Nigerian will stand out anywhere you find him/her,from Libya to London, Tokyo to Timbuktu. Well known examples include HakeemOlajuwon (Houston Rockets, USA), Olumide Oyedeji (Seattle Sonics), TundeBaiyewu (Lighthouse Family), Sunday Adelaja (Ukraine), Chris Aire (US), etc.

NIGERIA - INDUSTRIOUS, INNOVATIVE and ENTERPRISING,with ACHIEVEMENTS

v Nigerians are intelligent, brilliant minds who haveproven their mettle in various fields - Wole Soyinka was the first African towin the much coveted Nobel Prize for literature in 1986. Chinua Achebe’sclassic novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ was ranked as number 14 in a list of top 100books in the world by Newsdesk in 2009. Others include Cyprian Ekwensi, MabelSegun, Chimamanda Adichie and Helon Habila whose literary works have won bothinternational and local awards at various times.

v We have budding fashion designers. Yes! It's a lineevery Bunmi, Amaka and Amina has decided to tow but to disregard the effort andoriginality of our Fashion Designers would be disrespectful. Tiffany Amber,Lanre Da Silva and Deola Sagoe are building world renowned brands, not tomention the legacy developed by the likes of Abba Folawiyo, Maureen Onigbanjo,Remi Lagos and Zizzi Cardow.

v Nigerians have excelled in the fields of economics andfinance, managing well established global bodies. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, thecurrent Minister of Finance, was until recently a Managing Director at TheWorld Bank. Obiageli Ezekwisili iscurrently the Vice President for Africa at The World Bank. Mr Adebayo Ogunlesiis a first class graduate of Oxford, and Managing Partner of Globalinfrastructure Partner (GIP), a concessionaire of London’s GatwickInternational Airport.

v We take technology and expand it in ways those whocreated it could not have imagined. For instance, take the BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) which allows you to send broadcast messages to all addresses on yourcontacts list; Nigerians recently found a unique way of advertising thedifferent businesses they do. Someone started a message highlighting the factthat many people in Nigeria are entrepreneurs or provide a service and includedhis BB PIN in the message and sent to all his contacts with the charge thatthey state the service they provide, include their PIN and send on to all theircontacts too. This seemingly small campaign has gone “viral” with whole listsof entrepreneurs and their BB PINs being passed from phone to phone. This is aclear sign of the ingenuity of Nigerians!

NIGERIA – GREAT PEOPLE

The referee blew the whistle which signalled the end of the first half of the game. That brought the chase after the ball to a halt. All the players looking tired, walked sluggishly as they approached the dressing room entrance. It had been an engaging 45mins.
For the two teams, the tales were different. They had both sides of the coin each to themselves. This was a crucial game and as with other games, no one would be happy to lose. In fact they didn't fail to prepare so the issue of preparing to fail wouldn't come in here. The next 45 mins would determine who wins the trophy in this crucial final of the prestigious league
For the winning team, their coach's job is to ensure they sustain the victory and score more goals while keeping the lead and from his words he told his team " boys we can do more than this, we can keep our lead and ultimately win the league. We are 45 mins away from the title".
During this 15 minutes break, the coach reviews the last 45 minutes of the game with his players and they discuss the game plan for the second half, the strategy, the changes to be made which will ultimately ensure they win the game.
It is usually a closed door session, to keep journalists, fans and other people away. This usually avoids distraction and keeps the game plan of each team in the right hands.
For the other team, their game needs to change, they can’t continue to play the same way and expect different results. They need to do much more than they did in the first half; they can’t accept a defeat just yet. Their coach told them “It is not over until we win, if we accept our defeat now then we have failed, we have all it takes to win this game, we have come this far and we won’t give up. The next 45 mins will make a difference if we take the challenge. We are 45 mins away from the title”
Both teams took into cognisance that their rival is not resting on its hoarse
The 15 mins talk is over and its left for either of the teams to take the game. Its either they win or they lose.
This is the half of the year 2011. The last 6 months has been a crucial part of our lives, but more importantly, is what we do with the days ahead.
Goals that have been set can still be achieved, in career, family, relationships, business, etc. Like this game of football there is an opportunity to change the game and accomplish everything you have set for the year.

Google is My Friend!

On this faithful day, I got a message on my blackberry from RIM telling me I needed to revalidate my gmail account. Meaning something was wrong with my account or password.

I tried to reenter the password and after several attempts which proofed futile, I decided to try it on a PC and then it dawned on me that my goggle account was deactivated due to the unusual activities noticed on my account by Google.

I did not realise the consequence of not having access to my account until I remembered it warehouses my blogger account, reader, docs, picassa, youtube, etc.

Consequently, I checked my blog link and it was no where to be found. My Blog was deactivated. Does it mean all my posts were gone? My emails disappeared?

The only option I was left with is to reactivate by answering questions that will provide details that shows I am the real account holder after a few attempts to reset the password. Details like frequently emailed contacts, the date I opened the account, the Google services I used and the date I started to use them, my last login date for the services, etc. Sigh!

As much as I could, I provided the details and in a few minutes I was able to recover my account. on logging in I saw a message informing me my account was hacked from India and the details including the IP address of the hacker was also given. the hacker had attempted to send spam messages with my email when Google deactivated the account due to the suspicious activity.

The promptness of the response is one thing I would say amazed me cos Ive had similar issues with my Yahoo and Hotmail accounts. The Hotmail account remains unresolved till date.

My 4 year old Google account still had the simple password I had registered with so it made it easy to crack. So in your best interest secure you accounts with passwords that cant be easily hacked or compromised by having a combination of characters and symbols.

what more can I say Google is my friend.

A Life that counts...

I'm thankful for everything he has done in my life and the lives of people he has blessed me with. He has kept me, provided, sustained, protected, shielded, delivered, guided, nurtured me through the years. I thank God for my parents, my siblings, family and friends.

On my birthday last year I wrote a piece on a life that counts. Reflecting again on this

Life is not really lived unless it counts. It does not matter how long we have lived, but a true measure of living is how it counts; The values we have created, the things we have been able to do, the lives we have touched.

Birthdays are not only to number our days but to reflect on the days and apply our heart to wisdom.

This will give you a good picture of where you are coming from,where you are and where you are going.. but most importantly knowing who God wants you to be and becoming it.

Don't Give Up on 2010...

Hello people, it’s the 17th of December, 2010. 8 Days to Christmas and 15 Days to the New Year, 2011.

2010 has been a great year with ups and downs, accomplishments, achievements, victories, disappointments, challenges and a year of great opportunities.

I had a couple of things I planned to achieve in 2010. Some accomplished, while some are yet to be achieved, but I'm not giving up on them yet. I believe some of the goals can still be attained in the 15 days left.

What have you planned to do in 2010? Don’t carry it over. It is still possible and this may be in the form of: approval for that project, funds release, moving into that new house/ apartment, writing that exam, buying that new car, acquiring that skill, writing that story, reading that book, visiting that friend, applying for that job, making that phone call, signing up for that course, paying that debt, making that neighbour smile, helping the needy, .....

Procrastination is the hallmark of failure.

Are you faced with an opposition, a setback on goals, targets, dreams, achievements and you have told yourself 2010 is gone and have decided to wait till 2011, maybe it has something better to offer.

If you wait till 2011, remember it will also come with its own challenges.

I believe it takes a 'second' to change a situation.

Don’t quit yet, a big break is coming your way.

Its here again, the 5th Edition of The Experience concert happening live at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, Nigeria on the 3rd of December 2010, 7pm.

The Experience is an interdenominational gospel concert featuring some of the best known musical talents. It has become the world's largest gospel music concert and the largest musical event in Africa. The Experience is convened and hosted by Pastor Paul Adefarasin of The House on The Rock and endorsed by 15 frontline churches and christain organisations in Nigeria.

The concert has featured different artists such as Don Moen, Kirk Franklin, Ron Kenoly, Cece Winans, Israel Houghton, Donnie McClurkin, Kurt Carr, Bebe Winans, Tye Tribbett, Lionel Petersen, and a lot of indigenous gospel artistes .

I have witnessed two editions of The Experience. The first being the maiden editon in 2006. I was an undergraduate at that time and I travelled down to Lagos with a couple of friends.

My second Experience was in 2009 (4th Edition), having missed the 2nd and 3rd Editions.

This year's event will feature artistes like Don Moen, Panan Percy Paul, Papa San, Phil Driscol, Mary Mary, Micah Stampley, Judy Jacobs, Mike Aremu, Isreal Houghton, Sammy Okposo, Fred Hammond, Chevelle Franklyn, Ron Kenoly and the Chosen Tresure Choir.

You can imagine 11 hours of worship, live music and prayers in a concert with over 500,000 people in attendance and its all for FREE.

This year, I'm involved in the event in the electronic media team for live updates, live blogging, Facebook updates, twitter, i-reporting, etc.

366 days ago, I posted the very first article on this blog. I'm very grateful to God, the giver of life for the opportunity he has given me to share my thoughts through My Writing.

I started this blog after reading some blogs. I was inspired by the depth of their creativity, passion, uniqueness, and style.

Alot has happened in the course of the year....from career, relationships, life commitments but its been the best year so far. I started with updating every week and this went for a few months until, career and other life commitment placed more demand on my time.

Are We There Yet?

On a cold saturday morning in the City of aquatic splendour, all hearts were filled with high hopes and excitement. The long awaited freedom was just a few hours away and the people were ready to embrace it. They believed it was all they needed to be free, to live their lives and have the oppurtunity to run the affairs of their nation by them selves and practically have their own future in their hands. It was meant to be freedom from slavery, dictatorship and every form of neocolonialism.

They embarked on a journey to the land of freedom and they believed the abundance of resources in their land and their ability to till the God-given fertile soil to produce the best of crops will sustain them and fasttrack growth and development.

Through the years, they had problems of leadership. The elected and the military dictators.

The diversity of culture, religion and tribes among them posed a lot of

challenges especially in leadership.

Their boat has been rocked by many storms which would have rendered them a failed state.

Religious and civil crises were not far fetched.

After Five decades, they seem not to have arrived their promised land yet, are they making any progress? when will they get there? These are questions they will find difficult to answer. Not even their leaders can answer any of these questions.

This reminds me of the biblical story of the Israelites. They journeyed for 40 years. A journey that was supposed to be for 40 days.

Oh God of Creation.....
Direct Our Noble Cause....
Guide Our Leaders Right.....
Help Our Youths to Know the Truth....

This is our Golden Jubilee...

We might not be there yet, but were are definitely on the path.

We are not yet where we want but we are not where we used to be

The progress might be slow and discouraging.

The good news is if we don't give up we will get to the promised land very soon.

3rd Time...My Testimony

Hello readers,

My last post was 35 days ago. I had no intention of staying off blog ville but I've been busy with work. I just pop-in once in a while to read other other blogs coupled with the fact that I also had a writer's block hence, I have a couple of unfinished posts.

I blogged about a similar experience a few months back. This is the 3rd episode of such...

This is my testimony.....

My day started early like every other day and I had a report from work I had to finish as it was due later in the day.

5 am: I started this report and needed to finish complete a particular a drawing. It was taking so much of my time so I decided to finish it when I get to work. up at work.

6:35 : I was getting late. Though I was through with all the necessary stuff and before I set out I called a colleague to know where the staff bus was at that time to avoid waiting at the busstop unnecessarily.

The call gave me a relief. I still had 15 minutes to get to my bus stop.

At about 6:45 I set out only to waited at the gate of the house. I was barely through receiving a call when I noticed a motor bike on the adjacent street. Within 20 seconds I saw the same motor bike a few meters away from me.

Two men were on the bike. The rider and the other guy left nothing for suspicion. He was well dressed, wearing a red guinea kaftan and also wore a cap. He was just drawing the gun when I noticed it and all I did was to take a flight back through the gates into the house. Surprised by my reaction, they took off. I'm sure they never anticipated my action. I waited for a few minutes to be sure they were gone. Going out again was not easy but I had to go to work. so I summoned courage.

I could have been hurt, my laptop (no data backup), phones, important documents, ATM cards, IDs, cash would have been lost.

I thank God as I asked myself a few questions:

What if he ran after me?

What if he shot the gun?

what if i did not see then coming?

what if the gate was locked?

What if what if?

The only answer I got was my need to give thanks to God for my sparing life and property.

I took me a few hours to get back to myself.

I was in shock all day and cant remember how I was able to do some work in the office.

The next morning, on my way to work, I was very cautious but I told myself I did not save myself the previous day so He who has kept me will not forsake me.

I pray it does not happen again. but I hold on to the fact that God is faithful.

Its good to be back :)

When Money Fails...

In my walk in life I found out that money is limited.
Yet we can do all we can all in a bid to get the money that cant even afford the things that are most important to us.
People do all sort to make this money.

They kill, they steal, they manipulate, they trade their values. Its very pathetic.
Sadly enough when they get this money, the only things they can afford are just physical things, cars, houses, properties, just name it.

Sure they can pay for all those.

My question is this. How much can you pay for your life, health, love, safety, good relationships, joy, happiness, wisdom, peace etc?
You can pay for health care but it can't guarantee your health
you can pay for education but it can't buy you wisdom or knowledge.
You can pay for security services but it won't guarantee you safety.
I have seen rich men who would give all they had just to have a sound health.

If only we had the right values

Money can fail.
Remember the recession, so many rich people became poor in no time.
Money failed

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying money is bad

You need money to do alot of things in life, you have to pay your bills, feed, buy some good things in life,

But loving money and holding it so dearly as if it can solve all our problems and satisfy all our needs.

One great feature I have enjoyed in the Nokia E72 is the GPS + Nokia Maps. Its a free Global Navigation system
I have been navigation with the phone and realise you cant miss your way with it.

You can search for streets, roads and location.

It can assist you in driving to a particular location by determining the best route to your destination.

The interesting part is if you decide to drive or walk using another route it automatically gives you an alternative route to your destination.

When driving with the map, it shows your speed, the time it will take to reach your destination, the total distance and the distance to the next turn.

It also shows the name of the street you are on and the street you are heading to.

A few weeks back, I was introduced to the WOMworld/Nokia program that allows you to have a two-week trial of some selected Nokia mobile phone by a blogger friend of mine. So I got the phone delivered this week.

...Dump site to Fame

I'm always inspired by stories of change. I watched a feature story on this particular guy who a few weeks back would not believe he would be seen all over the world (BBC, YouTube, etc)and even have the opportunity to travel or even shoot his music video in London.

Eric Obuh had been a scavenger and all he did was to source for scraps and sell them at the dump yard just to make a living. Along side he was a musician and also used the little money he got from the dump yard to support his music.

...every bit of scrap he finds brings him one step closer to his dream of launching his music career- BBC

His life had a new turn when he was featured on the controversial BBC documentary, "Welcome to Lagos" in the first episode he was one of the major characters and he shared his experience on the dump yard. He also had the opportunity to share his music with millions of people around the world. A rare opportunity many artists who have been in music for years do not have.

I would be right if I say his story can be tagged "the dump site to fame". Its a story of change.

The documentary brought him to limelight and he is no more a scavenger. Although he was denied a UK visa for a concert on the 31st of May he still has hope of traveling sometimes in June.

PS: I was not a fan of the Welcome to Lagos documentary. I believe there are better stories of Lagos which could be told, not just the slums, the dump sites or the shanties. This documentary could just be the single story of Lagos that would be told to people around the world.

The Will to CHANGE....

Your Story taught me a lesson
Never to give in
On hope, my dreams, faith, or life in general
Your will to change inspires me
You sought to have a better life
Tired of living the mediocre life.

Late last year I met this young guy who had a story in which I saw the will of a person to change.

He was born and he also grew up in the UK. He grew up thinking nobody liked him coupled with the fact that his parents were separated so he knew little of a fatherly and motherly care. All they provided him was the money he needed to do the things he wanted The only love he seemed to find is amongst his friend who engaged in a lot of unwholesome activities. He had joined a gang. Gangs are not just meant for fun. He was exposed to gang fights, violence, drugs and other social vices. The marks on his body can tell a lot of stories

At a particular point in his life, he got to a point where he did not find satisfaction in the things he did, he wanted a change but knew nowhere to find it. He wanted to commit suicide but I believe it was God that made this impossible. The change actually started when one of his gang mate was killed and some went to jail for other offences. I really don't know how he escaped that.

He then realised that his association with this gang would not change anything in him. He craved for a change but he did not know how. His environment was not helping either. All the influences were putting pressure on him to return to his ways.

During summer in the particular yeah he came to Nigeria with his mum and since then has been around. It was an escape from the influence and his old ways.

Now starting a new life is not easy. Habit are not just things that we can easily drop. But with the help of God this guy got back to school in Nigeria. now he should be studying law in one of the universities.

He is doing very well now. He has his priorities right. He has the oppurtunity to live a life of affluence now but he has chosen not to. He now knows his boundaries and things that can influence him.

Things can change, change is inevitable

But note that change can be for better or worse.

The willingness to change, to life a better life is what moves me in this story. You need to hear him speak. He has been through a lot.

His story taught me a lot. For a person to say "I want to change", This is a major step but dont stop at saying you must believe in the change. Can you remember the "Change We Believe in" campaign of President Obama in the last American presidential election campaign? That was a great change in the history of American politics

I have not been involved in social vices. I don't have any habits I'm dealing with. So does that make having some things change about me easier? I don t think so.

The will to change is key. But the natural man resists change. He is used to having things work the way they are. He is used to the status quo. Tell him its going to change you might just create more problems for him.

There are changes we can control and there are changes that we cannot influence the outcome.

We live in an ever changing world.

Only those with the will to change and are prepared for the change will weather the storm a change might bring.

1.God - this is His place.He is always First. God is Love! He is the essence of Life. The Father of all creation

2. Family- I love my family: my parents, my siblings and relations. They have always been there. I value family

3. People/Friends- I love being around my friends, meeting new ones and keeping them.

4. Writing - I know I have a gift to write so i'm trying to harness it. i love it. "If it is not written it does not exist"

5. My Laptop -Wow. this one ehhhn.. I can count the days I have been without my laptop. I'm addicted to it. Its getting old though. I need to replace it (God loves a cheerful giver). btw its saying hi. lol

6. Internet- It one of the greatest inventions, I can hardly do without it. on the mobile or PC.

7. Music & singing. I can sing. Really I can. and I love listening to music too. I'm very choosy though,

8. Photography & Pictures I love taking pictures. I only need to have a reason to capture an event and thats all. I love collecting pictures too. Can't wait to get my own camera (God loves another cheerful giver. lol).

9. Helping people/Volunteering I can over do this one. My heart just goes out to the helpless. Wish I can do more.

Tweeting for a Cause!

Tweeting for Charity
I got the opportunity I had always wanted and this was to volunteer for such an event like tweet for charity
It started when I had to help out the Lagos team with some legwork. knowing that the Orphanage was a 5mins walk from where I live.
This is an orphanage I had earlier been opportune to visit and make donations.

My heart always goes out to giving, charity and helping people in general .
I once wrote a poem about some orphans I had once met and that is the best i have written so far (I think). It still pains me that it was misplaced .I had teary eyes when I was writing it I hope I find the poem someday cos its hard rewriting it.

So the event went well with majorly tweeters coming together to make a difference in the lives of these kids ages between 0 and 7.
I used to think all kids in orphanages could be adopted but this thought was dispelled we were told that some are for adoption while some are for fostering. The kids were lovely, the smiles on their faces, their response, they actually felt loved, triplets, the very cute baby...
I always tell myself and the people I come in contact with that we are not better off. Its just a privilege that we enjoy

These kids never knew what it felt like to be in the hand of a mother, to enjoy the cuddle of a father, suck from the breast of a mother....
In all it was a wonderful experience to give to those who are in need.

Also had the opportunity to see some of my followers on twitter for the first time and I came to the conclusion that people don't really look like their tweets (pun intended) but really they don't. your tweets don't define you. You define your tweets.

Our Connected World: From Yahoo to Twitter to...

It started with email(Yahoo, can you remember Onebox?), then chats and pen pal sites. I then moved on to yahoo groups. When Hi5 came. I thought it was the best thing that will ever happen, then Facebook proved me wrong. I was a Facebook addict. I spent hours on Facebook doing what? chatting, looking for old friends, reading friends wall, viewing pictures. I don't know why I was never on Myspace. Guess I don't have friends on the network. Now its Twitter. and the question I always ask myself is what next after twitter?
Can you imagine how a brand can change the way people do things or use their time.
Imagine a world without Facebook, twitter, Myspace... and social networking as a whole (did you say not fun?). I'm sure there would be some other things that people would do online anyways.

Lets go back in time.
Before social networks, what did we do on the Internet?
People communicate only via emails. Then the only form of social networks were pen pal sites, dating sites, etc. And you spend most time of the time online sending mails or for a research of probably chat
Now that you can even take the internet wherever u go on you mobile & laptop.
My main concern is the way social networks like Facebook & Twitter captured the hearts of people such that on the average an individual have a daily visit time of about 15 minutes to update, comment, post, send messages; tweet and retweet as in the case of twitter for hours. One question i always ask myself is how long will these sites continue to influencial and the only answer I always have is : as long as they continue to be relevant and meet people's need. Its not as if there are no other social networks and these are not the first. Other networks like Okurt, Hi5, Friendster, etc have only dominated some continents or regions (Okurt-Asia) failed to have a global significance. With this significane It has become addiction to a lot of people, Medium of advertising, hooking up, networking, social action and ultimately money making venture to the owners.
These sites have influenced the way the businesses operate.
It has become such that if your business is not on a social network, you are missing something out as long as internet presence is concerned. Businesses, Corporations, organisations, Celebrities and Individuals all build their fan base and use the networks as a medium of brand communication.

So I have found this new love for twitter. There is just something about following and having followers, reading your timeline and checking checking your dms. oh I love the hash tag (#) and the @ sign and most importantly my followers.You would love to participate in interesting TTs (#lightupnigeria. #naijawomen #welcometonigeria). Lightherlamp's blog post on twitter speaks volume too

Even Google recognised the fact that twitter provides real time information.

If you are not on twitter you don't know what you are missing. ha ha.

Another question I always ask myself is where is my own Facebook or Twitter (global idea)?
Does anyone have any ideas please share. We might just build the next social network who knows. lol

Its barely 60 days to the next FIFA ~~U-23~~ soccer world championship, South Africa 2010. This is the first time Africa is hosting such an event I guess the next event to be hosted is Olympics but I guess that is not anytime soon but I'm sure we can do it. Yes we can.

The stage is set SA is waiting and the world is eager. Who would not love to be at the World cup. Even to hear the sound of the Vuvuzela tooting in your ears or hear the Fans Cheering. This is the time you would wish u were a citizen of SA or at least you live in SA.

A lot of work has gone into this. Stadium Construction, Infrastructure upgrade, etc Sure Millions of dollars have gone down.
This is one of the major events that brings the world together irregardless of our differences. It unites the world this is because every continent is actively represented. This Event is not just for football but it about having the best of football players playing for their countries. The likes of Rooney, Messi, Arshavin, Tevez ....just to mention a few would be expected to root for their country
If Nigeria missed the ticket to participate it would have been a different story but thanks to God.

Every 1st of April is marked as April Fools Day . A day that is recognised for the playing of pranks on people, friends, family,etc commissioning hoaxes or sending people on a fool's errand like wikipedia puts it
The day started off with a follower on twitter waking me up from my sleep to play a prank on me. It was a good one.
Secondly, I fell for Vera's prank saying she was moving to Nigeria. Until I got to the end of the story. I should have known Vera better and I promise not to take her seriously again. (at least on April 1st).

Thirdly, it was a news I read about the Pope resigning. I had to go check CNN and BBC when I did not find it there then it dawned on me that I had been pranked.

After these 3 pranks I fell for no other. I guess I got April wise or I had mastered their prank pattern. Some other people tried but I was expecting it so I never fell for it. he he
At a point i thought of pulling a fast one on someone but I think I was nice enough to call it off
This April is going to be a great month for me, better than March. For me March was a very fast month probably because I had a lot of things I had to do in a limited time.
This April I need wisdom to do all I will be laying my hands on this month cos wisdom is very key.

Wisdom is the main thing; get wisdom, and with all your getting, get understanding. - Prov 4:7

Wisdom is the correct application of knowledge, but you need to understand, that is know the purpose of the things you do.

Its about two ladies I admire

I might also do a feature post on guys I admire sometimes soon. Both are black and Nigerian, They are good at what they do. I have only had the opportunity to meet one of them not personally though. But would love to meet them (no crush lol )

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

An excellent writer. she has 3 popular books to her credit. The purple hibiscus, Half of a yellow sun and the thing around your neck. My closest contact with her was at one of her book reading event a few years back when i was still in the university.

At the age of 19, chimamanda left Nigeria and moved to the United States to study. After studying at Drexel University in Philadelphia she continued studying communications and political science. She received a university degree from Eastern, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2001. In 2003, she completed a master's degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 2008, she received a Master of Arts in African studies at Yale University. Chimamanda is a 2008 MacArthur Fellow. She was a Visiting Writer at Wesleyan University, in 2008, and participated in Wesleyan's Distinguished Writers Series.

Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, was published in 2003 and won the Best First Book award in the 2005 Commonwealth Writers' Prize.

Her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, named after the flag of the short-lived Biafran nation, is set before and during the Biafran War. It was awarded the 2007 Orange Prize for Fiction.

Her third book is a collection of short stories titled The Thing Around Your Neck and was published in April 2009

Asha

Born Bukola Elemide, Asha was born in Paris, France to Nigerian parents. She was two years old when her family returned to live in Nigeria. Asha grew up in Lagos, in the south-western part of Nigeria. I love this lady, she is just great on the guitar (one of my fav) and she has nice lyrics too.

I like Tracy Chapman and I think they have a couple of things in common.

She has had the chance to test out her talent on the French musical scene, playing with artists such as the Nubians, Manu Dibango, Doctor L and Tony Allen. In Nigeria, her first single, Eyé Adaba, then Jailer were great tracks.

Her popularity became big, that when she came back to Nigeria she opened for Akon, John Legend, Beyoncé and Snoop Dogg amongst others.

Her first Album, Asha, is a great one. I love all the tracks but my favs being Bibanke and Ilu.

I'm just in love with the works of these two ladies and I know they will go far. And I will also love to meet them personally. But do they have anything in common? *thinking*

The Memories of My Father

365 x 2 days ago I received a call telling me my father was no more.

It took me a while to understand what this meant.

Especially the fact that I ceased to have a person I can call Daddy

I can still remember what it feels like as a kid,

The feeling of a freshly shaved beard as you cuddle me

You wanted the very best for us and gave your best

You never spared the rod when it was necessary

A trained accountant, but you were also my English language teacher

Ensuring my essays were well written

I remember all the discipline you inputed

I now know it was part of the process and it was the best

Even when I did not get all I wanted

I now realise I've been given all I need, the care, the love.

Those who don't have it crave for it.

You were fearless and dauntless

Very principled

You always craved for a better life

You gave your best

I know if you have more you would not hold back

Humorous, firm, strict, principled, disciplined, accountable are some of the words that describe you.

The truth is if I had another opportunity to chose again

My choice would not be different

A lecturer of mine would always say

There are times in our lives when decisions are made by us or for us. Decisions we may be limited to either a yes or a no.

A few days ago I accompanied someone to the Lagos US embassy on Walter Carrington Crescent, VI, The road is well known cos its majorly occupied by embassies of US, UK, Germany, Italy, India, Finland, Bulgaria.

The US embassy is a place where as a visa applicant, the response you get is an approval or a denial in the form of a yes or a no.

It was an experience. I got there as early as past 7am cos the appointment was scheduled for 7.30am.
At this time the place was already full . I was only allowed to wait under a tree while I also enjoyed the view of the Lagos lagoon watching speed boats passing bye and also caught a view of Femi Otedola's £12 million yacht.

I waited for 4hrs before she was called in and she spent another 3hrs plus in the embassy all for a yes or no.

While I was waiting, as people came out of the embassy, you could easily say from the look on their faces and the way they walked the response they got. They could laugh, smile or just have a blank face. But for some people you just can't tell They hid their emotions and expressions.

Decisions can make or break us.
It is more natural to say yes. Its least confrontational its just agrees to wishes of other or going along with them and cos its not easy to say no so we comply.
Saying yes can also mean accountability on the respondents part it means you give your support and you are saying its ok.

This is a song we sang back in primary school at lunch time. Just a form of prayer said before having our lunch.

As a kid I understood the song. knowing that there are people who had food and those who did not have even in my class.

This is a reality of life. Some have food but cannot eat. Its not that they don't to but they just can't.

This could be by virtue of their disposition, mood, health condition, worries,

The fact is that the food is there but it can't be eaten. how painful. I have seen people who are on hospital beds and would love to eat but its just not possible they are being fed with fluids and pipes.

On the other hand, those who have the ability to eat, appetite and are hungry for food just don't have any food to eat. Thats an Irony of life.

And there are people who have food to eat and can eat it.

They do so without taking thought of the fact that there people living with the above conditions.

Above all whether there is food or not. Thank God for the gift of life, 'cos only the living can eat.

A Life That Counts.

It has been some 12 days since my last post though its not that I have been away from Blogville but I have just not been able to get my fingers to type this post. lol.

I have not being able to post something on this blog since my birthday though I have being reflecting on one scripture of the bible that people usually make reference to for birthdays it says:

So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.

People only number their days on their birthdays forgetting the fact that
everyday our life actually counts.
Numbering your days would make you apply
your heart to wisdom.
Numbering does not mean counting or the arithmetic sum
of the days you have lived since birth it only a way of accounting for the life
that you live.
Now the question is how do I apply my heart to wisdom?

Applying wisdom gives you the understanding that as humans no matter how long we live, life is short so any opportunity we have to make our life count should be maximised.

I would rather have it said 'he lived usefully' than 'he died rich.' - Benjamin Franklin

Instead of seeing the world in terms of how much money he could make, Franklin saw the world in terms of how many people he could help. To Benjamin Franklin, being useful was his own reward.

Living a life that counts entails giving, loving, helping, serving, encouraging, adding value to others and impact the lives of other people positively.

My life would not just count in term of wealth or degrees.

So, is your life counting? Make you it count!

Another Birthday!

Some 360 something days have gone bye,

It baffles me how time flies

I'll be a year older in a few days.

This reminds me of my tenth birthday. On that day I actually checked my height and weight and I was dissapointed to see that nothing really has changed.

My thought- since I was a year older, I believed something about me should change (physically).

The way kids think.

Now in my twenties I know you are guessing early, mid or late twenties whatever I'm 2o something .

This time around I'm not going to check my height or weight but I'm going to weigh somethings.

Future, Relationships, Purpose, Career,...

This counts now! not height or weight. LOL

A life of Purpose, A purpose for Life

In the last Two weeks, i have been involved in one incidence or the other which I escaped narrowly by the hand of God.
These has got me thinking that for a life that is preserved, it means there is purpose for such. This increased the desire to know more of purpose for which God has created me.

This is my story...

The first was close to a major road on my way to work, this funny looking guy whom I cant really remember how he looks likes walked up to me and pulled out something from the bag he was carrying and pointed it at me. lo and behold it was a gun. I took a quick glance at it and that was the last the thing I could remember.

All that was running through my mind while I was running was: have I been shot? , I'm I sure I'm still here, was i bleeding? Guess what i took to my heels. This a response to stimulus. I wouldn't have done this if I took a thorough thought of it. I ran to catch a bus. Then I wondered why the guy did not give me a chase. I'm sure he did not expect my reaction. He was too surprised to follow me.

The bus officer told me the bus was not going through my route. I insisted on following the bus telling him a guy was after my life or bag (or both).

What was even in this bag? My very own laptop, some books and very important documents. So this guy would have taken all away. Never!

Scene 2 was just a close shave to motor bike accident. For a second I was wondering why people around were shouting. What happened? the next second made things clearly. A bike with two guys on it was on top speed and was braking when he saw I would not stop. cause I was actually crossing the road. What was I thinking of? life, babe, food?

All I can remember was that I jumped raising my right leg (like in those action movies) and the motorbike handle just bruised my abdomen. All in 3 secs. I left the scene immediately patting down my own body. Hoping that I was not hurt.

I left the scene also thanking God. It was so dramatic. I would have been on Plaster now suffering from a crushed leg. God forbid!

As if that was not enough the third scene got me scared. Was in a bus and I guess the driver was either high on alcohol (or something else) or the brakes just failed.

He decided he would not stop until he made a good inelastic collision (little from my physics class) with a pathfinder jeep. My grip was not firm enough. so i saw myself almost on the floor (in the bus) with a bruised wrist. We got off the bus immediately. Thank God again.

Now I was getting scared but I had to assure myself. If God saved me from these then. He will do more.

When the purpose of a thing is not known, surely abuse is inevitable.

I cant expose myself to abuse , I'm on purpose

I have a purpose I know,

I must know it all,

I must live it to the fullest,

I must fulfill it.

I'm not here to play,

I'm not here for games

I'm here for impact and to impart not to impress.

A life without purpose can be anything and even achieve anything (The last time I checked anything meant nothing)

Know your purpose run for it, stay on it, achieve it, never turn away from it.

My Heart Goes Out!

Since the breaking of the news of the 7.0 earthquake of Haiti on CNN, alot of things have gone through my mind. Seeing picture and videos of the catastrophic disaster that hit Haiti was terrifying. The site of mass dumps of dead bodies was very horrifying.
People were trapped in rubbles and wreckage of buildings and structures left behind by the earthquake.
The 9million plus population was thrown into disarray. This dissaster will no doubt take them back in the line of development.
Haiti being a country that has a history of natural disaster like Tsunami floods. This is one of the poorest countries in the West if not the poorest.
My first close encounter with Haiti was a few year back when I heard a story about Haiti and Haitians.

I was told that the the American Embassy in Haiti is conspicously and distinctly located amongst other building in Haiti (Not sure about this) with sophistication and beauty compared with other buildings around it.
When you greet and average Haitian, the responce is usually "I am not worse", meaning I might not better than yesterday, but I'm not worse.
One comment about the disaster that struck me is the fact that Haiti might not recover from the earthquake or it might take up to 10 years for recovery. For a country that was poor and was just trying to survive.
My consolation is the hope and will to survive that the citizen possess. They are indeed strong having gone through alot.

When the untrue becomes true
You have bought a lie, in exchange for the truth
You used it and We got used to it
So you don't care to know
It doesn't bother you
The reality is dawning
You put the reality in denial
Truly you have bought the untrue
The truth has been slain, murdered in cold blood
Your conscience has been sheared

When abnormal becomes normal
It is a sign you have been used to disorder
When you are used to pain, then relief , comfort becomes abnormal
when you are used to poverty and lack, Then abundance, provision, wealth and good living becomes abnormal
When you are used to hatred & a broken heart, Love a mirage, it becomes abnormal
When you get uses to injustice, then justice becomes improper
When you get used to failure, then sucess, breakthrough becomes unattainable
When you get used to YOU, your comfort zone, a better you becomes unrealistic

Change is the only constant thing they say
Undo your thoughts to impossibility and glue it to optimism and possibilities
Then the untrue and the abnormal really becomes unacceptable.

Time my Time

However we try, we cant hold it back, we cant stop it.

The hands of the clock just keeps moving sweeping through every revolution
You can't stop it or freeze it
You can't manage it, you can only manage the activities within it.
Its never enough.
It goes on with seconds rolling into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, months into years and years into a lifetime.
What you do with it drives your life and shapes your future
Everyone has the same time resource, the rich, the poor, the young, the old, the learned, the illiterate.

No one gets more, nobody gets less.
What is done within it is what makes a difference of a lifetime
There is a time for everything

A time to sow and a time to reap

A time to be sad and a time for joy

A time to give and a time to receive

Time gives an opportunity to for a better future

There is time to love

There is time to write and a time to refrain from writing

Life is Long term

Life is long term in the sense that what we do today goes a long way affecting how our future would be. A lot of people just think short term just because the do not see the end in view. They do things just because of the present gain and they do not think of how today's decision can affect tomorrow's events.
Even if the decision you make does not pay in the short term, its like an investment for the future. A very good example is the relationships we heep. A lot of people can't keep relationships for long because they only think of what they can gain presently and once that is achieved, they move on to look out for another one and most times looking for how to be the only to gain, that in a way being a parasite.
The gain is supposed to be in both ways and not one-sided.
Even if it is not paying now learn to delay gratification.
Always think long term, because it pays before you know it.
